Houston, Texas - (October 17, 2017) – Park Plaza Hospital today announced that it has achieved 5 stars for its performance in treatment of pneumonia from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. This achievement is part of new findings and data released today by Healthgrades and featured in the Healthgrades 2018 Report to the Nation. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.*
"This recognition further validates the excellent work we do every day," said Doug Chung, CEO, Park Plaza Hospital. "It took a lot of hard work to earn this award, and I am honored to work alongside such a highly skilled team of experts who always put patients first."
The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally. This variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. For example, from 2014-2016, if all hospitals as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5 stars as a group, on average 219,568 lives could potentially have been saved and 164,454 complications could potentially have been avoided.** A 5-star rating indicates that Park Plaza Hospital's clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated.
“In an environment where consumers have more choices about where to receive their care, a hospital’s commitment to achieving high-quality outcomes is fundamental,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “Because consumers place such value on this information, hospitals that achieve five stars for treatment of pneumonia stand out in their marketplace.”
*For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluate outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 17 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
